Islan Eltuyev

In his prime, Islan was ranked a number one boxer at 63.5 kg  in the whole of USSR. Having competed during an era when USSR boxers regularly topped the world rankings and provided stern opposition to boxers from Cuba, America and other Soviet Bloc countries, Islan’s accomplishments speak for themselves:

  • 2 x Light Welterweight USSR Boxing champion: first in 1987 and then again in 1988;
  • a distinguished member of the USSR Boxing squad, from 1987 until 1990;
  • qualified as one of USSR top representatives to 1988 Summer Olympic games in Seoul;
  • coached a British boxer Jamie Cox, helping him to win gold at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, in spring 2006.

After fleeing the conflict in his native Chechnya and hanging up his gloves,  Islan has made the natural progression from competing to using his skills to train up a new and upcoming generation of boxers in Bath, Swindon and surrounding areas.

Islan is a phenomenal coach who’s training philosophy is simple, build up a rapport between the coach and the athlete and make sure that every training session is like a conversation between the two. This ensures maximum benefits for the athlete and greater job satisfaction for the coach.

During the lessons, Islan views his role as insuring that everyone trained by him reaches their maximum potential. If he manages to mould boxers into British, European and World champions in the process, then he knows that his job is done well. He says that the most important thing in a boxer is their ability to listen, that way they can be taught anything, be it technique, style, stamina or power.

In addition to teaching boxing classes in both Swindon and Bath, Islan is also available for a private one-to-one sessions. If you are interested in benefiting from his knowledge and experience then do not hesitate to contact us or simply drop in to one of our training sessions.
